Here’s what you’ll need for your wooden Christmas ornaments:

  • Pre-cut wooden shapes
  • Yarn scraps
  • Electric drill with 1/8 inch drill bit
  • Embroidery needle
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Small piece of scrap wood

Step by step guide to craft the Christmas tree ornaments:

Step 1: marking spots

Begin by marking the spots that you plan to drill holes. For this design, I marked 6 equidistant dots around the perimeter, 1 in the middle, and 6 surrounding the center dot.

Step 2: Drill

Carefully drill through all of the dots. Use a piece of fine grit sandpaper to smooth any rough edges.

Step 3: tie yarn

Tie a loop at the end of one of your pieces of scrap yarn, as shown above. This will become the hanger for your ornament.

Step 4: crochet

Put the needle on the other end of your piece of yarn. Poke it from back to front through the top hole, then down through the middle one.

Step 5: continue the process

Continue going up and down through the holes until you’ve completed the design. Every stitch will go through the middle hole for this particular pattern.

Step 6: back tie knot

On the back, tie a knot and tighten it down by the hole. Trim the excess pieces of yarn.

Your ornament is complete! Repeat the process for your other wooden shapes, using different patterns and yarn colors.

Get creative with the designs… as you can see above, you can make every point go down through the center hole, or you can run the string around the perimeter to create an enclosed design.

The ornaments have a retro, almost mid-century modern feel to them, while the hold, saturated colors lend a contemporary vibe.

You can get creative with these… try using other yarn colors, and perhaps you might even combine them together. And give some other patterns a try too. The possibilities are endless!
