If marijuana drying requires staying away from sunlight and moisture, some people may be tempted to store cannabis in the freezer. But can this affect the quality of the weed?
Weed is great for many people and if you choose to try it out yourself, freezing can very well be a solution, but under some conditions.
Can You Freeze Weed?
For the most part, freezing is something that people take into consideration when it comes to drying out the marijuana plants. However, while freezing weed is something you can do, it’s not something you should do. Let us explain.
Decarboxylation is a chemical process that occurs during the drying of cannabis. The raw plant contains THCA, a non-psychoactive molecule. During drying, however, THCA is transformed into THC, the psychoactive molecule of cannabis.
By storing the cannabis in the freezer, the process of decarboxylation stops, which will give a product less powerful than a properly dried product.
Basically, if you dry your plant out in the freezer, the weed will have a less potent effect.
There’s also the version where weed is properly dried and placed in the freezer, which leads to another problem.
Trichomes are those small white or amber (mature) particles that you see on your heads. Trichomes give the flavor of your herb and make it unique. But they are also responsible for creating cannabinoids.
When the ice freezes, the trichomes are weakened. They will break when you take the cannabis out of the freezer, even with delicacy. In addition, the container may also affect trichomes. At the exit of the freezer, the trichomes will break in the same way.
Using a Vacuum Sealer to Freeze Weed
If you’re adamant to freeze your weed, however, the best way to do this is with the help of a vacuum sealer. The absence of oxygen prevents the degradation of trichomes and the vacuum sealer will extract all the air and provide a perfect seal.
We have a whole list of great vacuum sealers you can try out, but our favorite is the FoodSaver V4840 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealer Machine which works great with both freezer bags and other types of containers, prolonging the life of your frozen weed.
How to Thaw Weed
The only valid reason for freezing weed is if you run out of glass jars after drying. Freezing should only be temporary.
That being said, freezing the marijuana will not change its taste so much, but it might affect its impact. American professionals still recommend leaving it half a day at room temperature before use.
