Can You Freeze Angel Food Cake?

Angel food cake is one of our favorites to have because it’s so light and fluffy and goes so well with fruit. However, as with lots of foods, we’ve had to throw out some slices as no one felt like eating any more of it. One of our readers seems to have had the exact same problem. Here’s a message they sent us:

Q. I had some friends over for dinner the other night and one of them brought an angel food cake for dessert. Everyone had a slice, but I still have almost half a cake left. I’m not going to eat all that cake in one sitting, but I don’t want to toss it in the garbage. I know they don’t stay fresh for long in the refrigerator. So I was wondering, can you freeze angel food cake?

Good news! – you can freeze angel food cake. Angel food cake is unlike most other cakes in that it doesn’t contain butter or heavy oils, so it loses its moisture quickly and can become dry and crumbly. For that reason, it’s best to freeze it as soon as possible so that it retains its soft, moist texture after being frozen. Since it’s such a soft, airy cake, it’s also preferable to freeze angel food cake without any icing or other toppings that can weigh it down in the freezer.

To freeze angel food cake, it might be helpful to freeze it in smaller slices so that it is easier to store without taking up too much space in the freezer. It is also important to double wrap it so that it doesn’t pick up any odors from the freezer.

  • Slice the cake into the desired size pieces.
  • Wrap the angel food cake in a double layer of plastic wrap.
  • Place the wrapped slices in a freezer bag. Carefully remove the excess air from the bag and then seal it. Label and date the bag.

Place the freezer bag with the angel food cake into a rigid storage container to protect the cake from being squished in the freezer. For best results, use frozen angel food cake within six months of freezing. To thaw frozen angel food cake, remove the desired amount from the freezer and place in the fridge or on the counter for several hours or overnight. When completely thawed, serve as is or add fruit or other topping to the cake before eating.

How to Keep Angel Food Cake Frozen for Longer?

One thing you can do to make sure the angel food cake keeps for longer is to use a food saver. These devices help provide a perfect seal for your food items, whether we’re talking about raw meat, cooked meals, and so on. We’re fans of the FoodSaver V4840 2-in-1 Vacuum Sealer Machine because it does such a good job at sealing and preserving food for longer.

It works with bags of 8 and 11 inches, so you’re good to go on smaller portions or larger ones, depending on your needs. It’s a pretty awesome device to have in your kitchen and it can ultimately help you save money and time.
