Do you know what the best part about DIY projects is? The fact that your imagination just almost the entire job, and the rest is just a bunch of items that you probably have lying around the house already, or other cheap items that you could easily find on Amazon or in the dollar store. Today, we wanted to show you the amazing things that you can create with tissue paper, some lace paper, and a bunch of utensils that are most likely already found in one of your drawers.
Materials you’ll need for Tissue Paper Heart:
- 2 colors of tissue paper
- Glue gun
- Glue stick
- Silk ribbon
- Lace paper doily
How to craft the Tissue Paper Puffy Heart:
Step 1: Making the Heart
The idea of this project is to create a nicely-decorate hanging heart using mostly cardboard and colour paper. Grab your pencil and draw the outline for the heart on your piece of cardboard. You can also print a perfectly symmetrical heart and use that as a stencil.
When your heart is outline, draw a smaller heart inside it. It’s up to you how much space you’ll be leaving between the two outlines, but it’s easier if it’s around one or two inches max.
Using your scissors, cut the heart outline and then the small heart inside it.
When you’re done, you should be left with a shape looking like this:
Step 2: Preparing the Tissue Paper
Next up, you’re going to have to prepare the tissue paper that will eventually end up looking like small bunches of fuzz. Grab one of the tissue papers and cut it in strips that measure around 1 or 1.5 inches.
When you’re done with cutting a strip of tissue paper, fold it into squares and cut them until you’re finished with the strip. Repeat the process for all the strips that you’re going to use of this one particular color.
Move onto the next color and use your scissors to cut strips and then squares from the second color of tissue paper.
Step 3: Making the Decorations
Grab one of the squares that you just made and place the eraser end of your pencil onto the middle. As you apply gentle pressure, twist the paper a little bit so that it takes the shape of the eraser, making something like a flower.
Grab your glue stick and place some glue on the cardboard heart. Grab the pencil with the wrapped piece of tissue paper around it, apply some glue at the end, and press in on the glued cardboard area. The
Grab a tissue square from the other color and, repeating the process, glue it above or underneath the previous decoration.
Then, grab a piece of tissue paper from the first color, and glue it at the top or the bottom of the one you just placed. You should now have a sandwich made from color 1 – color 2 – color 1.
As you’re moving forward, add another layer next to this one by repeating the same process over and over again. The idea is to cover the entire heart in puffy tissue paper with the first color close to the edges of the cardboard and the other color placed in the center row.
When you’re done, your paper puffy heart should look something like this:
Step 5: Adding the Finishing Touches
Grab the lace paper and cut the decorative ends, which you’ll be using to cover the edges of your new decoration.
Cut a ribbon piece in the length that you desire so that you can comfortably hang your new decoration where you want it to.
Using your glue gun, glue the ends of the ribbon in two symmetrical spots on the back of your decoration, where the cardboard heart is still exposed. Keep in mind that symmetry is important because otherwise, your decoration will hang crookedly.
Next, proceed with gluing the lace paper on the edges of the cardboard heart. Apply glue using your glue gun as you go along, to make sure the paper sticks to the cardboard.
And your finished tissue paper puffy heart should look like this:
Not only is this a beautiful Valentine’s Day gift, but it can also serve as a home decoration, whether it’s a project that you want to tackle all by yourself or you want to involve the children in this pleasant weekend-afternoon activity. You can experiment with different tissue paper colors and feel free to change the shape of your cardboard cut-out as well (for instance, you can make a wall hanging star using yellow and white tissue paper).
