This hidden fridge problem quietly drives up your electric bill: one quick check could save you hundreds
Your fridge sounds fine. It clicks shut, the light goes off, and you move on with your day. But somewhere between last month’s power bill and this one, something started running that shouldn’t be. The motor tucked behind the fridge that keeps everything cold (that’s the compressor) is kicking on more often. Sometimes for longer stretches. Sometimes overnight.
You haven’t changed how you use it. The freezer’s still frozen and the milk’s still cold. So what’s going on?

Most people never think to check the one part of a fridge that quietly decides how hard it has to work. It’s not the temperature dial. It’s not the coils on the back. It’s not something you can hear, smell, or spot from where you’re standing. It’s a spot on the fridge you walk past a dozen times a day and never look at.
Why the appliance that never turns off is running more
Your fridge is already the one thing in your kitchen that never turns off. The U.S. Department of Energy says a typical new fridge with automatic defrost and a top-mounted freezer costs about $55 a year to run. That baseline isn’t the problem. It’s what happens when one small thing slips, and nothing else looks any different.
The compressor is built to run in bursts. On for a bit, off for a while, back on. When something quietly forces it to stay on longer, it wears out faster, and the cost shows up in two places: your monthly bill, and eventually a very expensive repair.
Short term, you pay a little more every month. A few dollars here, a few dollars there. Easy to miss.
Long term, the numbers get real. Replacing that motor runs a few hundred dollars, and sometimes it costs more than the fridge is worth, so most people just buy a new one. A new fridge runs $800 to $2,500 (roughly €740 to €2,300) or more.

Add up extra dollars on the bill every month, a shorter appliance lifespan, and food that spoils because the inside temperature isn’t holding steady, and you’re looking at hundreds of dollars over a few years.
The overlooked spot every big appliance maker points to
What makes this so easy to miss: every trustworthy source points to the same overlooked spot, and nobody talks about it in everyday conversation. The U.S. government runs an efficiency program called Energy Star that gives homeowners a short list of things to do to keep a fridge running well. One of those things is aimed straight at a spot on your fridge almost nobody thinks to check. It’s not deep inside the machine. You can reach it with one hand, in the time it takes to open a drawer.
Whirlpool points to the same spot on its own product support pages. Reviewed (part of USA Today’s network) points to it. Warners’ Stellian, a big U.S. appliance retailer, points to it. All of them say the same thing: check this one spot on the door, and you’ll catch a problem that quietly runs your bill up for years.

Ask ten homeowners when they last checked it, and nine will say never.
The one part almost nobody bothers to check
The part is the door gasket: the bendy rubber strip running around the inside edge of your fridge and freezer door. It has a magnet built into it, and when you close the door, that magnet grabs the metal frame of the fridge and forms a tight seal. Cold air stays in. Warm, damp room air stays out.
Energy Star’s guidance on this is one line: make sure the seals around the doors are airtight. If they aren’t, replace them.
That strip is built to last for years, but it doesn’t last forever. The rubber dries out, hardens, and loses a little of its grip. Food crumbs and sticky spills get pressed into it. A corner flattens where the door has closed on it thousands of times. Small tears open up that you’d never notice unless you were looking for them.

And the door still clicks shut. The magnet still grabs. From the outside, everything looks and sounds fine. But if there’s even a tiny gap anywhere along that seal, warm room air starts leaking in around the clock. Not just when you open the door. All day. All night. Every hour.
A 2024 study in the engineering journal Energy, led by researcher Tianyang Zhao, found that better-sealing door gaskets cut heat leakage into the fridge by up to 27%, and cut the fridge’s total energy use by up to about 3%. That doesn’t sound like much on paper. But a fridge runs 24 hours a day for its whole lifespan (about 16 years, per the U.S. Department of Energy), so that number adds up year after year, quietly.
The 30-second check that tells you the truth
The good news: you don’t need a repair tech, a special tool, or any experience. All you need is a piece of paper. A dollar bill (or a folded strip of printer paper) works.
Try this:
- Open the fridge door, and place the bill flat against the frame so half is inside the fridge and half is sticking out.
- Close the door on the bill, gently but fully, so the seal grips it.
- Pull the bill outward. If it tugs back at you (like the door is trying to hold onto it), the seal’s doing its job at that spot. If the bill slides out easily, or falls out on its own, there’s a gap.
- Repeat at three or four more spots: the top, both sides, and the bottom. A seal often fails in one spot while the rest is still fine.
- Do the same test on the freezer door.
That’s it. Half a minute, no cost, no tools.
What to do if the bill slides out
If you found a weak spot, don’t panic. In most cases, the fix is easy and free.
- Start with a good cleaning. Appliance repair pros quoted in Tom’s Guide say dried food, grease, and grime on the gasket are the number one reason a seal stops working. Wipe the gasket down with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth, get into the folds, then dry it thoroughly. Run the paper test again.
- Still loose? Try realigning the rubber. Warners’ Stellian recommends warming the gasket with a hair dryer on low (or with warm water), then closing the door and leaving it shut for about an hour so the magnet can pull the rubber back into place. This works surprisingly well on gaskets that got warped from being pinched or stuck open.
- Still loose? Try a thin layer of petroleum jelly. Reviewed recommends rubbing a light coat of Vaseline along the gasket. It softens hardened rubber and helps the seal make full contact. A thin wipe is enough.
- If none of that works, the gasket needs replacing. A new one runs $50 to $150 (about €45 to €140), depending on your model, and on most modern fridges it’s a screwdriver-and-patience job you can do yourself in about an hour. Search your fridge’s model number online for the exact part.
