If eggs can’t be kept that long in the refrigerator, you may be tempted to freeze them so as not to spoil a box of eggs that you just opened. Separating whites and yolks, raw or cooked, even cooked – what are the different ways to freeze eggs?
Can You Freeze Raw Eggs?
It is possible to freeze raw eggs to keep them longer. However, several rules must be observed to avoid any risk to health.
One of the main things you have to do is to wash the eggs. The shells themselves can carry germs so you want to get rid of those by washing the eggs. Do so by putting the egg under water and rubbing it gently without using soap. Then, you simply have to dry the eggs with a clean cloth.
How to Freeze Raw Eggs?
Now that you know what you must do with your eggs before you even consider freezing them, it’s time to make another decision – are you freezing them whole or separating the whites and yolks?
- If you’re freezing egg whites and yolks separately, go ahead and separate them now.
- Once that’s done, you have to place the eggs in freezer bags.
- Remove as much air as possible and close them.
- If you don’t want to separate the whites and the yolks, grab your whisk and mix them up.
- Then, pour the beaten eggs into a freezer bag, take out the air and place it in the freezer once you label it.
- You may also want to write down how many eggs you have in each bag.
How Long Can You Keep Frozen Eggs?
Importantly, the shelf life in the freezer of raw eggs is 4 months maximum, so put the deadline on the bag so you do not forget to use them.
How to Freeze Hard Boiled Eggs
Cooked eggs can also go into the freezer. However, this can alter their texture. A cooked and frozen egg white will become gelatinous upon thawing. If the yolk is very cooked (boiled egg), it will keep its capacity but may be dry in the mouth.
You can keep them between 6 months and a year.
