DIY Clothespin Dragonfly For Kids

Like my own kids, are your little ones totally into all things creepy crawly? My kids simplyadore bugs and I’m always trying to find ways to combine the things they like most with crafting in order to really get the most out of their creativity. They’ve been particularly obsessed with dragonflies lately andI’m quite a big fan of upcycling regular household things into crafts, so that’s how I found myself helping them make little clothespin dragonflies!

If you’d like to learn how these funny little creatures were made as well, check out these photos with step by step instructions or scroll to the bottom of this post to find a video tutorial.

For this project, you’ll need:

  • A clothespin
  • Green paint
  • A paintbrush
  • A pencil
  • Cardboard (purple and yellow)
  • Crepe paper (yellow and light pink)
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors
  • A glue stick

Step 1: get everything ready

Gather your supplies from the list and make sure you have everything you need!

Step 2: paint blue

Use your paint brush to paint your whole clothespin blue. Set it aside to dry.

Step 3: cut wings

Draw four oblong wing shapes; two on your yellow paper and two on your purple paper. I made mine about two inches long, rounded on one end with a straight edge at the other. Cut all four pieces out.

Step 4: glue wings

Apply glue to the straight end of each wing piece and slot them in the middle of your clothespin, pinched between the wooden arms right around where the spring is. Angle them slightly so they overlap where they meet while the rounded ends splay a little, just like real dragonfly wings. I arranged one of each colour on either side of the pin, across from its match, but you can switch it up if you prefer.

Step 5: cut the crepe paper

Cut strips about two inches long and half an inch wide from your crepe paper; two pieces from the yellow and one piece from the light pink.

Step 6: roll into balls

Roll teach of those strips into little balls between your hand. These will make your dragonfly’s body and head.

Step 7: glue on the body

Apply glue to the bottom of each crepe paper ball and stuck them in a row down the flat top of the clothespin so the pink ball sits at the front tip with the two yellow balls behind it.

Step 8: apply eyes

Apply glue to the backs of your googly eyes and stick them onto the front of your light pink ball where your dragonfly’s head is.
