Your hot water runs at one setting you’ve probably never changed: and it’s quietly adding to your energy bill

Somewhere in your basement, garage, or utility closet, a tall metal tank is heating water right now. It’s been doing that since the day you moved in. And there’s a pretty good chance nobody has touched its dial since it was delivered.

That untouched dial is doing something to your monthly bills, to your family’s safety, and to the tank itself. Most people don’t know it’s happening. Most people also don’t know it can be stopped in about five minutes, for zero dollars, using no tools.

Before we get to what to change, it’s worth understanding why this one dial matters so much, and why the setting it’s on right now was never picked for you.

The setting your water heater came with

Most water heaters, gas or electric, leave the factory with the dial cranked way up. This wasn’t a decision your plumber made. It wasn’t a decision your builder made. It’s just where the dial happens to be pointing when the box shows up at the warehouse.

And once it’s installed, that dial almost never gets touched again. Homeowner after homeowner, house after house, the same setting keeps running.

The U.S. Department of Energy has been quietly trying to get people to change it for years. Their guidance says most homes don’t need water anywhere close to that hot for showers, dishes, or laundry. So the tank spends every hour of every day keeping a full drum of water hotter than anyone in the house actually uses.

That “hotter than you need” habit is where the trouble starts. And it doesn’t cause just one problem. It causes three.

The invisible tax on your bill

When water sits in the tank hotter than it needs to be, it’s constantly bleeding heat into the room around it. The garage, the basement, the closet. Wherever the tank lives, that room is quietly soaking up warmth you paid for.

The burner or the electric heating coil then has to kick back on to reheat the water, over and over, all day and all night, whether anyone’s using it or not. The Department of Energy calls this leaked warmth “standby loss.” And they’ve done the math on exactly how much it’s costing the average American household. It’s more than most people would guess.

The seconds nobody talks about

The second problem is the one that makes doctors and safety officials the most nervous.

At the temperature your tank is probably running at right now, the water coming out of your faucet is hot enough to cause what doctors call a third-degree burn, the kind that needs a hospital, sometimes skin grafts, and can leave permanent scars. Not from a splash on the stove. Not from a spilled pot of soup. From your regular tap.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has been sounding this alarm for decades, and thousands of people, mostly kids under five and older adults, end up hurt this way every year in American homes. The exact numbers, and how fast it can happen, we’ll get to in a moment.

What’s happening inside the tank

There’s a third problem, and this one is happening to the water heater itself.

The hotter the water sits, the faster minerals in it settle out as a chalky crust at the bottom of the tank. That crust sits between the burner and the water, so the burner has to work harder and longer to heat through it. Meanwhile, the inside walls of the tank slowly rust from the constant heat. That rust is what most water heaters eventually die from.

So the same dial that’s padding your bill and making your faucet dangerous is also slowly killing the appliance itself. Three problems, one setting.

If you’re reading this and thinking, I’ve genuinely never touched that thing in my life, you’re in good company. Almost nobody does. The good news: fixing all three problems takes one adjustment, no tools, and about five minutes.

The number your dial should be on

The fix is to turn the thermostat down to 120°F (about 49°C).

That single number is what CPSC, the DOE, and the CDC all agree on for a normal home. And once you see what changes at that setting, it’s hard to understand why anyone leaves the dial where it comes from the factory.

  • On safety: at your tank’s likely current setting, hot water from your tap can cause a serious burn on adult skin in about six seconds, and on a small child’s thinner skin in as little as three. Those numbers come from CPSC data and a 2024 study in the medical journal Injury Prevention. CPSC estimates around 3,800 people get burned by too-hot tap water in American homes every year, and 34 die from it. At 120°F (49°C), the burn window stretches from a handful of seconds to about five full minutes of exposure. That’s the difference between a lifelong injury and a “yikes, that’s hot” moment where you can still pull your hand back.
  • On money: dropping the dial to 120°F cuts your water heating bill by roughly 6% to 10% a year, per DOE numbers. Given that water heating is about 18% of a typical home’s total energy use, that’s real money over time. The DOE puts wasted “standby” heat alone at $36 to $61 a year (about €34–€57 or £28–£48), and once you count showers, dishes, and laundry running on cooler-but-still-plenty-hot water, the savings grow from there.
  • On the tank: less heat means less mineral crust and less rust, which buys you extra years on an appliance that costs a lot to replace.

How to actually change it, in five minutes

  • Gas water heater: Find the round dial on the small control box near the bottom of the tank. Most brands mark it “Warm” or “Vacation” on the low end and “Hot” or “Very Hot” on the high end. Turn it counterclockwise to roughly the middle, or right to 120°F (49°C) if the dial shows numbers.
  • Electric water heater: First, flip the breaker for the water heater off at your electrical panel. Then unscrew the small panel on the side of the tank (usually one or two screws), gently push the insulation aside, and set the dial to 120°F (49°C). Put everything back and flip the breaker on.
  • Check it worked: Wait about three hours, run the hot water at your kitchen sink for two full minutes, and stick a cooking thermometer in the stream. You want to see roughly 120°F (49°C).

One thing to know before you turn it lower

Don’t set the tank below 120°F. The CDC is clear on this: at 120°F, you’re safe, but if the tank runs any cooler, the water in it gets warm enough for a bacteria called Legionella to start growing. That’s the germ behind Legionnaires’ disease, a serious lung infection.

If someone in your home has a weak immune system, is on chemo, or is an older adult with lung problems, the CDC recommends keeping the tank at 140°F (60°C) and installing special mixers on your faucets and shower heads that cool the water back down before it comes out. If that describes your household, talk to a plumber about mixing valves before you turn the dial down.

For every other home, 120°F (49°C) is the sweet spot. One dial. Five minutes. A smaller bill, a safer faucet, and a tank that lasts longer.
