Running a damp sponge through standard dishwasher cycle doesn’t sanitize it: the 2-minute trick that does

If you’re the kind of person who tosses your kitchen sponge into the dishwasher every few days and feels good about being clean, there’s something you should probably hear.

That sponge you just “washed” is very likely still crawling with germs. Not a little. A lot. And it’s about to touch every counter, cutting board, and coffee mug in your kitchen.

Most people figure that once something goes through a dishwasher, it’s clean. Hot water. Soap. Over an hour of running time. Case closed. But the regular cycle almost everyone runs is missing the one thing that actually kills what’s living deep inside your sponge. Unless you know what to look for, you’ll keep pulling out a sponge that looks fine and is anything but.

Your sponge might be the dirtiest thing in your whole house

Kitchen sponges are the perfect home for germs. Wet. Warm. Full of tiny holes. Touching food scraps all day.

A widely reported 2017 study in Scientific Reports, part of the Nature journal family, found that a used kitchen sponge can hold up to 45 billion germs in a space the size of a sugar cube (per cubic centimeter), and 362 different kinds of bacteria living inside. That’s not a typo. Billion.

To put it another way, the researchers said your kitchen can actually have more germs than your bathroom, mostly because of the sponge.

Now, most of those germs are harmless. Your kitchen is a living space, not a hospital. But some of them aren’t. The USDA has confirmed that used kitchen sponges can carry food poisoning germs like E. coli and Salmonella, the same ones that send people to the ER after a bad meal. So every time you wipe down a counter with that sponge, you’re not cleaning the counter. You’re smearing germs across it.

So the instinct kicks in. You want to clean the sponge. Most people reach for the same solution.

The confident habit that isn’t doing what you think

Ask ten people how they clean their kitchen sponge and most will say the same thing: “I just throw it in the dishwasher.”

It sounds airtight. Hot water. Soap. Over an hour of cycle time. What could possibly survive?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

The problem isn’t that your dishwasher is broken. It’s cleaning your plates just fine. The problem is what “clean” actually means when the thing you’re washing is a squishy block full of tiny air pockets, with germs hiding deep inside. Rinsing the outside of a sponge with hot soapy water isn’t the same as killing the germs on the inside. And the inside is where the trouble lives.

Sponges are made to hold water. That’s their whole point. So when water sprays past a sponge in a dishwasher, most of it goes around, not through. The middle stays warm, damp, and mostly untouched. Which happens to be the exact set of conditions germs like best.

That would still be fine if the water outside the sponge was hot enough, for long enough, to eventually cook the middle. And this is the exact detail almost everyone gets wrong. The heat it takes to clean the outside of a plate and the heat it takes to actually kill germs deep inside a sponge are not the same number. And most dishwashers, on the cycle you probably run every day, aren’t hitting either one.

There’s a real, published number for what that heat needs to be. Once you see it, the whole picture snaps into place.

The temperature your dishwasher probably never hits

For a long time, food scientists have known there’s a specific temperature line where germs stop being able to survive. It’s not a mystery number, it’s not a guess. It’s a rule that appliance makers in the US are held to. And the reason it matters here is that it draws a very clear line between “your dishwasher cleaned this” and “your dishwasher sanitized this,” and most people don’t know the line even exists.

According to the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), the independent group that sets cleanliness standards for home appliances in the US, a dishwasher can only officially claim it “sanitizes” anything if the final rinse water hits at least 150°F (66°C) and stays that hot long enough to kill 99.999% of common germs. That rule is called NSF/ANSI 184.

That’s not the temperature your dishwasher runs at by default.

Appliance maker Whirlpool says a normal wash cycle usually tops out around 140°F (60°C). That’s just at the edge of where food poisoning germs start to die, but not hot enough, and not for long enough, to actually sanitize anything. Eco-friendly and quick cycles run even cooler.

So on a regular cycle, the outside of the sponge gets warm but not clean-clean, and the inside, protected by all that trapped water, doesn’t even get close. Every time you pull that sponge out and squeeze it, you’re squeezing germs right back onto your counters, plates, and hands.

The 2-minute fix that actually works

If you read that and thought, “yeah, that’s basically me,” you’re in good company. Here’s what actually works.

Microwaving a wet sponge for 1 to 2 minutes killed 99.99999% of the germs. That’s the finding from a 2007 study by USDA food scientists Manan Sharma and Cheryl Mudd at the Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland. Running the sponge through a dishwasher cycle with a heated drying cycle killed 99.9998%. Both also wiped out yeast and mold, dropping them to less than 1%.

For the study, the scientists soaked kitchen sponges in a nasty ground beef broth until each held about 20 million germs, then tested five common cleaning tricks people use at home. Bleach soaks, lemon juice, and plain water rinses killed between 37% and 87%. Not enough. Only two methods actually cleared the sponge.

Option 1: The microwave method (2 minutes, free, works with any sponge with no metal in it).

  • Rinse the sponge to get food bits out.
  • Soak it until it’s dripping wet. Not damp. Dripping. A dry sponge can catch fire in a microwave. A wet one turns into steam.
  • Put it on a microwave-safe ceramic plate (not plastic, which can melt).
  • Microwave on high for 2 full minutes.
  • Let it cool inside for another 2 minutes before you touch it. It’ll burn you otherwise.
  • Don’t microwave a sponge with metal scrubbing pads, staples, or wires. They spark and can start a fire.

Option 2: The dishwasher method. Put the sponge on the top rack, press Sanitize, Sani-Rinse, or Hi-Temp (whichever your model has), and turn on Heated Dry. That drying step is where the sanitizing actually finishes.

Do one of these every other day if you use your sponge daily, and you’ve cut your kitchen’s biggest germ hideout by over 99%.

One honest note before you go

Sanitizing your sponge keeps it safe. It doesn’t make it last forever. A 2020 follow-up study in the journal Microorganisms found that even sponges you sanitize regularly slowly fill up again with tough germs that survive heat. The ones that make you sick, the E. coli and Salmonella types, die every time. The smelly ones are harder to fully evict.

The honest full picture: sanitize every other day, and swap it for a new one every one to two weeks, or right away if it smells or wiped up raw meat juice.

That’s the whole trick. A regular dishwasher cycle just washes your sponge. Two minutes of steam, or one specific button, actually sanitizes it.
