A space heater isn’t always cheaper than your central heat: one number tells you if it’s really saving you money

You bought the space heater to save money. That was the whole idea. Warm up the one room you’re actually sitting in, let the rest of the house go cold, and shave a chunk off the winter bill.

Then the electric bill showed up in January and it was somehow bigger than last winter, not smaller. Not by a little. By a lot.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not doing anything weird. You’re running into a rule almost nobody tells you about before you plug the thing in, and it’s the reason a space heater can quietly cost more than the whole-house furnace it was supposed to replace. Not always. Not even usually. But often enough that the U.S. Department of Energy keeps having to remind folks about it, and often enough that families in pricey electricity states are watching one little heater add a hundred bucks (about €93) or more to their bill in a single month.

The catch is that “small appliance” and “small bill” aren’t the same thing. A space heater looks harmless. It’s the size of a mailbox and hums quietly in the corner. What it’s actually doing is pulling the same power as a hair dryer running non-stop, all evening long. That gap between what it looks like and what it draws is where the bill surprise lives.

There’s exactly one number that tells you which side of the line you’re on. Once you have it, you’ll know in about three minutes whether your heater is saving you money or eating it.

Why “smaller heater must mean smaller bill” isn’t true

Every plug-in electric space heater on the market, whether it costs $30 (about €28) or $400 (about €370), works the same basic way. There’s a metal coil, a ceramic plate, or a metal fin inside, and it turns almost every bit of the electricity you feed it into heat. Nothing gets wasted inside the box. That’s the number the marketing loves to brag about, and it’s technically true. It’s also misleading.

The U.S. Department of Energy explains why: that “100% efficient” claim leaves out how the electricity got to your outlet in the first place. Most of the power on the U.S. grid still comes from plants that burn gas, coal, or oil, and a big chunk of that fuel’s energy gets lost on the way from the power plant to your wall socket. So even though your heater wastes nothing, the whole system feeding it does. The DOE flatly says electric heat usually costs more per unit of warmth than heat from a natural gas furnace, roughly two to three times more once you count the losses. That’s why a quiet little ceramic tower in your living room can still hit your bill like something much bigger.

Federal rules also cap portable electric space heaters at 1,500 watts, per Iowa Electric Cooperative Living. The rough rule most electricians use: about 10 watts of electricity to heat one square foot (roughly 0.1 square meters) of space. Do that math and a maxed-out 1,500-watt heater is really only sized to handle around 150 square feet (about 14 m²), and only if that room is well insulated, sealed up, and not leaking heat out a big drafty window. Most American living rooms are bigger than that. Most have at least one drafty window. Put a 1,500-watt heater in a 250-square-foot room (about 23 m²) with old windows and the thing will run flat-out for hours and never actually hit your target temp, which means it never gets to shut off.

The one number that actually settles it

The number is your electric rate per kilowatt-hour (kWh, meaning one kilowatt of power running for one hour). It’s printed right on your electric bill, listed as “price per kWh” or “energy charge.” Once you have it, the math is dead simple: watts divided by 1,000, times your rate per kWh, equals your cost per hour.

For a standard 1,500-watt heater, that’s 1.5 times your rate. At the U.S. average residential price of about 18.44 cents per kWh (roughly €0.17 per kWh), reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in August 2026, one heater running full blast costs about 28 cents (€0.26) an hour. Sounds like nothing. Until you multiply it out: 8 hours a day works out to about $66 a month (€61), 12 hours a day about $100 (€93), and running it around the clock lands near $200 (€185) a month.

Compare that to a natural gas furnace: roughly $1.00 to $1.25 an hour (€0.93 to €1.16) at typical U.S. gas rates, per the New York State Climate Action Council and Sevier County Utility District. Same money, but a furnace warms the whole house. The DOE’s own estimate: heating a full home with electric space heaters can cost about 43% more than a gas furnace.

Your local rate is the wild card. Idaho pays about 12¢/kWh. Hawaii pays about 52¢. At 12 cents, an 8-hour-a-day heater costs about $43 (€40) a month. At 30 cents, over $108 (€100). At 52 cents, around $187 (€173).

The three-minute fix

Do this before you turn the heater on again. It’s free and takes about as long as brushing your teeth. First, the trap most folks fall into: a space heater only saves money if the main thermostat comes down at the same time. Run it on top of a full furnace cycle and you’ve just added an appliance to your bill. So:

  1. Find your rate. Look on your last electric bill for “price per kWh” or “energy charge.” Multiply that number by 1.5 for a full-power 1,500-watt heater. That’s your cost per hour.
  2. Measure the room. Length times width in feet. If it’s over about 150 sq ft (14 m²), or has a drafty window or a poorly-insulated outside wall, a 1,500-watt heater will run flat-out and still lose.
  3. Turn the central thermostat down when the space heater’s on. The DOE’s zone-heating math only works if the main system dials back too. InterNACHI, the home inspectors’ group, says doing it this way can trim your total heating cost by up to 10%.
  4. Seal the room. Shut the door. Pull curtains at night. A rolled towel at the base of the door helps more than you’d think.
  5. Use a smaller heater when you can. 750 watts is plenty for a small office or bathroom (under about 75 sq ft, roughly 7 m²). Save the full 1,500 for bigger sealed rooms.
  6. Plug it straight into the wall. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that portable heaters cause about 1,700 home fires and 70 deaths a year, and never to run one through an extension cord or power strip.

A space heater is a helper, not a replacement furnace. In one small sealed room while the rest of the house stays cooler, it can genuinely cut your bill, and that’s the scenario where the DOE says the math works. Used to warm a big drafty living room without touching the thermostat, it’s one of the fastest ways to blow past what central heat would’ve cost.

The reason this trap catches so many people is that it feels responsible. Turning down the furnace feels like saving. Running a smaller device feels smaller. Both instincts are fine on their own. Together, in the wrong room, they quietly become the priciest way to heat one corner of your house.
