Wi-Fi is always weak in one spot? The 10-minute fix most people never try

There’s one spot in almost every home where Wi-Fi just quits. The back bedroom. The far end of the couch. The garage corner with the treadmill. You know the spot. Everyone in the house knows it.

You’ve probably blamed your internet plan, or the router, or the walls of your house. And after the video call freezes for the third time in the same chair, you’ve probably thought about paying for a faster plan or a mesh system.

Here’s the thing almost no one tries first: the free move that fixes most weak spots in about 10 minutes. It costs nothing. It doesn’t need new equipment. It’s the same fix the FCC and every big internet provider quietly recommends before anything else. Most people never do it because they don’t know why the dead spot is there in the first place.

The dead spot isn’t random

Wi-Fi is an invisible signal, kind of like light. Your router sends it out in every direction, like a bare light bulb glowing in a room. It gets weaker the farther it travels, and every wall or big object weakens it a little more.

Some stuff barely slows it down. Other stuff eats it alive. Signal tests by WiFi Planet show regular drywall usually cuts a Wi-Fi signal by only about 10 to 15 percent. But thick concrete or brick walls can cut it in half or worse. Big metal things, like your fridge or a filing cabinet, bounce the signal around and create small pockets where it doesn’t reach at all. Even large mirrors count, because most mirrors have a thin layer of metal on the back that bounces radio waves the same way it bounces light.

Distance matters too. The FCC’s own home Wi-Fi tips page says the older kind of Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) can reach about 150 feet (46 meters) indoors on a good day. But the faster kind your newer phone and laptop prefer (5 GHz) only reaches about 50 feet (15 meters). The newest and fastest one (6 GHz, on Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers) reaches even less. Faster Wi-Fi has a shorter reach, not a longer one.

So every home has a shape. There’s a spot where the signal is strongest, and a spot where it runs out. The dead corner isn’t a mystery. It’s the last place the signal reaches before it gives up.

Your microwave is in the fight too

There’s a second thing quietly killing your Wi-Fi that has nothing to do with walls. Some everyday appliances give off invisible radio noise on the same frequency your Wi-Fi uses.

The biggest one is the microwave oven. Microwaves heat food on almost the same frequency as one of your Wi-Fi bands (2.45 GHz, right next to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi). A well-sealed microwave shouldn’t leak much, but a research study in the International Journal of Antennas and Propagation found real-world ovens leak enough to mess with nearby Wi-Fi, especially older ovens or ones with worn door seals. If your Wi-Fi drops every time someone makes popcorn, that’s not a coincidence. It’s two things fighting for the same radio space.

Cordless phones, Bluetooth speakers, and wireless baby monitors sit in that same space too. Comcast’s own home Wi-Fi guide on the Xfinity New England site tells customers to keep the router away from microwaves, fridges, cordless phones, and TVs.

The one-router problem

Now think about where your router actually lives. When the technician came to set up your internet, they plugged it in wherever the cable came into the house. For most American homes, that’s a spot on an outside wall, tucked in a basement, a den corner, an office nook, or a cabinet in the living room. Nobody picked that spot for Wi-Fi coverage. It got picked because that’s where the cable came in.

Here’s where it all clicks. Wi-Fi spreads out from your router in every direction, like ripples in a pond. If your router sits in the middle of the pond, the ripples cover the whole surface evenly. If it sits on the edge, half the ripples head out into empty space, and only half go across the water where you actually need them.

That’s what’s happening in most American homes. Your one router is stuck in a corner, or against an outside wall, or hidden in a cabinet. The signal that should reach your back bedroom is instead heading out into your neighbor’s yard, or into a concrete foundation, or getting swallowed up by the metal in the fridge on the other side of the wall.

You don’t have a dead zone. You have half a router. The other half is wasted on space that doesn’t need Wi-Fi.

The 10-minute fix

This is the part almost no one tries first, even though it’s what the FCC, Comcast, and pretty much every Wi-Fi installer recommends before you spend a dollar on new gear. The FCC’s Home Network Tips page puts it plainly: to get the best Wi-Fi coverage, put your router in a central spot.

Here’s how to do it in about 10 minutes:

  1. Find the true middle of where you actually use Wi-Fi. Not the middle of the whole house on a floor plan, but the middle of the rooms your family lives in. Comcast’s guide points to the living room or an open shared space as ideal.
  2. Get it up off the floor, about chest high. Routers send their signal a little bit downward, so if yours sits on the floor, half the signal goes straight into the slab under the house. A shelf or tall side table works. Comcast says to keep it up high and standing straight.
  3. Give it 3 to 4 feet (about 1 meter) of open space around it. No cabinet, no drawer, no shoebox. Xfinity’s setup guide is blunt about this: hiding it in a closet is one of the most common mistakes people make.
  4. Move it away from the kitchen and away from mirrors. Give the router at least 6 feet (about 2 meters) of space from your microwave, fridge, or any big decorative mirror.
  5. Use a longer cable if you need to. Most homes already have an extra 10 to 25 feet (3 to 8 meters) of cable coiled up behind the router. If not, a 25-foot cable costs about $10 (about €9) at any hardware store.

If the middle of your house is truly out of reach, that’s when a mesh Wi-Fi system or a range extender earns its keep. But here’s the trick most people get wrong: put the extender halfway between your router and the dead spot, not inside the dead spot. TP-Link’s own guide says it plainly. An extender can only pass along a signal it can hear well. Put it in the weak spot and it has nothing to work with. A basic extender runs $30 to $50 (about €28 to €47). A small mesh two-pack starts around $150 (about €140).

What actually changes

Move the router once and most homes see the far-side signal jump right away. Wi-Fi installers report speed jumps of more than 60 percent in upstairs bedrooms when the router moves from a basement corner to a shelf in the middle of the main floor. The dead corner isn’t really a dead corner. It’s a router in the wrong spot.

You don’t need a faster plan. You don’t need a new router. You don’t need a mesh system, at least not yet. All you need is 10 minutes and the willingness to move a small plastic box that’s sat in the same spot since the day you moved in.
