Almost every home has one weak spot letting in drafts, dust, and bugs: the fix costs under $15

Get down on the floor by your front door for a second. Close the door all the way, then look at the very bottom.

If you can see a thin line of daylight, or feel a cool ribbon of air on the back of your hand, you’re not looking at a small cosmetic problem. You’re looking at the one spot most American homes leave wide open all year. It’s why the entryway feels colder than the rest of the house in January. It’s why that little side table by the door keeps picking up dust no matter how often you wipe it. And it’s a big part of why ants and roaches seem to show up out of nowhere every summer.

What makes it so sneaky is that nothing about the door looks broken. It shuts. It locks. The paint’s fine. But that little sliver of space under it, the one nobody notices until they get down and look, is doing more damage to your home than almost any other spot on the outside. And almost no one closes it.

The gap looks tiny. The hole isn’t.

Sit with the numbers for a second. Virginia Cooperative Extension, the home advice arm of Virginia Tech, breaks this down in their guide on sealing up drafty houses. A pair of 6-foot-8-inch (about 2 m) exterior doors with a quarter-inch (about 6 mm) gap around the edges adds up to roughly a 20-square-inch (about 130 sq cm) opening to the outside. That’s about the size of a small paperback book. Just sitting there in your wall, 24 hours a day, letting outside air walk right in.

Even a single door with just a thin gap at the bottom does the same thing, only smaller. And because warm air rises and cool air falls, the gap under an exterior door is the busiest of all. In winter, cold outside air pours in low along the floor. In summer, your air-conditioned indoor air slides out the same way, and hot outside air slides in above it.

The U.S. Department of Energy, on its Energy Saver page, points out that sealing up leaks around doors and windows is one of the fastest, cheapest ways to cut heating and cooling costs. Sealing and adding insulation together can save up to 10 percent on your total yearly energy bill, or about 20 percent of your heating and cooling costs, when it’s done right.

The bugs don’t need a hole. They need a slit.

The part most people don’t know is how small “small” really is. The University of Kentucky’s bug experts, in their pest-proofing guide (one of the most trusted sources on this in the country), spell it out plainly. Gaps of 1/16 of an inch (about 1.5 mm) or less are enough to let in bugs and spiders. A quarter-inch (about 6 mm) gap is enough for a mouse. A half-inch (about 13 mm) gap will let in a rat. Roughly the width of a pencil is a mouse-sized door.

And their next line is the one that should stop you cold: they say to pay special attention to the bottom corners of outside doors, because that’s where mice and bugs come in most often.

Now go check your own door. The gap you can see daylight through is almost certainly wider than 1.5 mm. Which means every ant, roach, spider, and centipede that’s ever wandered into your entryway has had an open lane, every single night, all year long.

The dust and pollen part is real too. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists “less pollen, dust, and insects entering your home” as a direct benefit of sealing up the outer shell of a house. If the floor near your front door keeps picking up a gritty film between cleanings, the gap is a big part of why.

Weatherstripping alone won’t fix it

Here’s where a lot of people get it wrong. Once they finally notice the gap, they peel off the old foam strip around the door frame and stick on a new one. That’s a good idea, but it only takes care of the sides and the top of the door.

The bottom gap needs its own separate part. The DOE’s Building America Solution Center, run through Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, is clear on this: a fully sealed outside door needs weatherstripping around the frame (top and sides), plus a second, dedicated piece along the bottom edge of the door itself. Two different pieces, doing two different jobs. Skip the bottom one and you’ve left the biggest, busiest leak wide open.

That’s the piece almost every American home is missing.

The fix: a door sweep, under $15, about 20 minutes

The piece you’re missing is called a door sweep. It’s a flat strip, usually aluminum or plastic, with a soft flexible edge (rubber, silicone, or a thick brush) hanging down from it. It screws or sticks to the bottom of the door on the inside. When you close the door, the soft edge presses flat against the threshold and closes the gap.

Tom Silva, the general contractor from This Old House, recommends going with a twin-fin silicone sweep for the bottom of an outside door, because silicone stays flexible in cold weather. Some of the cheaper vinyl ones get stiff in winter and leak. A basic screw-on sweep at any hardware store runs about $8 to $15 (roughly €7 to €14, or £6 to £12). Most households already have the tools.

The whole job, start to finish:

  1. Check the gap and measure the door. Slide a piece of paper under the closed door. If it slides easily, or you can see clear daylight, the gap is real. Measure across the bottom of the door, inside frame to inside frame, and write down that number.
  2. Buy the sweep. Look for one labeled “screw-on” (better seal, lasts longer) rather than “peel-and-stick” (the tape lets go over time in heat and cold). Silicone or heavy rubber holds up better than thin vinyl or a brush.
  3. Cut it to length. Most sweeps come long and get trimmed at home. A hacksaw or a pair of heavy-duty scissors will handle the aluminum backing.
  4. Hold it in place with the door shut. Position the soft edge so it just barely touches the threshold, or presses very lightly against it, when the door is closed. Not hard enough to make the door drag, not loose enough to see daylight.
  5. Mark, drill small starter holes, and screw it on. The PNNL guide says not to tighten the screws all the way at first, so you can slide the sweep up or down a little to get it right, then tighten fully.
  6. Check your work. Close the door, turn off the entryway lights, and have someone shine a flashlight along the outside edge at night. If any light comes through, adjust the sweep down a hair.

That’s it. Under $15 in parts. About 15 to 20 minutes if it’s your first time.

What actually changes after you install it

Don’t expect a miracle on your electric bill overnight. Real savings from sealing one drafty outside door land at a few percent off heating and cooling costs, per DOE guidance, spread across a whole season. The wins you feel come faster: the entryway stops being the coldest spot in the house in winter, the floor near the door stays cleaner, and the nightly parade of ants and crawlers along the threshold quietly stops.

That thin line of daylight under your door isn’t a cosmetic problem. It’s the one weak spot doing the most damage, and the cheapest thing on your whole house to shut for good.
