How To Knit A Kitchen Towel – Yarn Craft

With the recent announcement of the PANTONE colors of the year, the famous color matching system is hot right now. And all kinds of PANTONE-themed products have beencoming out lately, from mugs to posters to storage containers – and now, a DIY hand towel! Today I’m going to show you how to make this clever little knit hand towel that any color lover is sure to appreciate.

How To Knit

Here’s what you’ll need to knit:

  • 1 skein of white yarn
  • 1 yard of black yarn
  • 1 skein of yarn in the color of your choice
  • Knitting needles
  • A darning needle
  • Scissors

This tutorial is written with the assumption that you already know the basics of knitting for beginners, but if not, feel free to check out some tutorials on YouTube and come back…. because this is an easy one, as long as you know how to cast on, off, knit and purl.

I would recommend using a medium weight yarn, and use the same brand and type for each color (unlike me… I doubled up my white as you can see below!). Begin by casting on 41 stitches of your colored yarn. The pattern is the same for every single row: knit 1, purl 1. Over and over and over again.

Continue that pattern with your colored yarn until it reaches about 14 inches in length. Then switch to the white yarn and continue with the same pattern for another three inches. Then cast off.

Thread your black yarn onto a darning needle and begin stitching the word “PANTONE” in block letters. Underneath, stitch the corresponding PANTONE number that is the closest match to your yarn color. The text will look a bit wonky because you’re stitching onto a textured surface, but that’s what gives it its whimsical, handmade appeal.

And that’s it, you’re finished! Cute, right? Prepare for all the compliments your designer friends are sure to give out. These are fun because they can be customized according to your decor… I use mine in my kitchen (which has pale mint green accents) but you could use it in the powder room as well. Or both!
