How to Make a Lollipop Ghost for Halloween

Recently, I bought a pack of lollipops as a sort of pre-cursor to their trick-or-treating and we started talking about all the things we could make the lollipops look like with a bit of creativity. That’s how we came up with the idea of making lollipop ghosts! I knew right away that it was one of those simple ideas I just had to share.

Here are the simple, quick instructions for how I made lollipop ghosts with my kids. Just in case you’re the kind of crafter who would rather watch a video than follow words and pictures, I’ve included one at the end of this post!

For this project, you’ll need:

  • A lollipop
  • White yarn or string
  • A black felt tipped pen
  • Scissors
  • White crepe paper

Step 2: cut the paper

Cut a strip from your roll of white crepe paper. I kept the full length of my roll and made my cut rectangle about four inches wide.

Step 3: fold in half

Fold your piece of crepe paper in half so it is doubled over and therefore more white and less see-through. You’ll now have a piece half as long as you did before. Cut off the end with your folded edge so you now have two separate pieces of crepe paper the same size.

Step 4: cut some yarn

Cut a piece of white string or yarn, whichever you’re using, that is about three inches long.

Step 5: wrap the lollipop

Take one of your two matching pieces of crepe paper and place it overtop of your lollipop, so the rounded to of the candy sits right in the middle. Fold it down over the lollipop, wrapping the crepe paper around the top and pinching it towards the stick to gather below the candy. Hold it in place there for now. Do the same thing with your second piece of crepe paper so your lollipop is covered in two wrapped and pinched layers and the colour of the candy doesn’t show through the paper. I angled my pieces of paper slightly differently before I pulled them downward over the lollipop in order to make a more ragged looking bottom, like the tail of a cartoon Halloween ghost.

Step 6: wrap the base

Wrap your string around the base of the lollipop in order to pinch the crepe paper there further and hold it in place. This creates the ghost’s head and neck and stops the paper from unwrapping. Tie it in a tight knot.

Step 7: trim

Cut the excess string from the ends of your ghost where you tied the paper in place. Feel free to fluff out the tails of your crepe paper layers below your string any time.

Step 8: draw face

Use your black felt tip pen to draw eyes and a mouth on your ghost. Feel free to play with different hand-drawn features and facial expressions if you’re making more than one ghost at a time!
