Section Off

The first and maybe most important step is to section off the area that you will be braiding.

Use your comb to create a rectangular area of hair along the top part of your crown. Keep that hair in the front, and use your hair clip to keep the rest of your hair out of the way.

Go left to right, use small sections

Starting at the left side of the rectangle, grab three sections of hair like you would a normal braid. Begin creating a french braid from left to right, using smaller sections than you would if you were braiding your whole head. Continue your braid, working down towards your right ear.

Be sure to bring the braid behind your ear, so you can easily hide the pins later on in the process.

Use a hair tie

Once you reach your ear, stop french braiding and continue on with a regular braid for a couple of inches and secure it with a hair tie. If your hair is fine like mine, use your fingers to loosen and fluff up the braid just a bit, focusing on the top of your head.

Next, pin the braid to your scalp using two bobby pins. Place them right above your ear and overlap them in an x shape so they stay put.

Secure the french braid

Remove the hair tie and the hair clip and bring the rest of your hair over your ear so it covers the bobby pins. Finish with a light hairspray to secure the braid and tame any fly-aways.
