A full freezer is cheaper to run than a half-empty one: the best way to fill it isn’t food

Go open your freezer. If you see more empty white plastic than actual food, and you’ve been telling yourself that’s fine because there’s less stuff to keep cold, you’ve got it backwards.

It feels like it should work the other way. Less food, less to freeze, less work for the machine. That’s what most Americans with a garage or basement freezer figure. It’s why so many sit two-thirds empty for months.

That habit is quietly costing you money every single day. The fix has nothing to do with buying more groceries.

What your freezer really costs to run

ENERGY STAR (the federal efficiency program run by the EPA) says a typical certified upright freezer uses about 395 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, or roughly $60 a year (about €55 or £47) at average U.S. rates. Older or off-brand models can push past 500 or 600 kilowatt-hours, meaning $80 to $110 (about €75 to €100, or £63 to £87) a year.

That’s the floor. It’s what your freezer costs before you’ve done anything wrong. And what pushes that number up or down depends on what’s inside your freezer right now.

The feds and a physics department all agree on this

Now it gets strange. Three very different groups have quietly said the same thing about your freezer, and almost nobody knows.

The U.S. Department of Energy, on its Energy Saver page, comes right out and says: “Keeping the refrigerator and freezer full can also help regulate the temperature inside.” The DOE recommends putting bags of ice in there if you can’t keep it stocked with food.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (the folks who set the rules for meat, poultry, and food storage) tells homeowners to “freeze containers of water for ice to help keep food cold in the freezer.” A federal food-safety agency plainly telling you to fill empty freezer space with water.

The physicists agree too. When a reader asked the University of Illinois Physics Van (the physics department’s public Q&A) whether it was smarter to leave freezer space empty or fill it, the Illinois physicists said flat out: empty space is wasteful. Fill it, and the appliance works less.

The DOE, the USDA, and a Big Ten physics department all point at the same thing. But none of them really explains the “why” in a way that sticks.

Why your empty freezer betrays you every time you open the door

The trick is to think of your freezer as two totally different machines: the one that runs when the door is closed, and the one that runs when the door opens. The first one is boring. The second one is where you’re bleeding money.

Freezers pump heat out of the air inside. A small motor (the compressor) kicks on, runs until the inside hits the setpoint (the DOE recommends 0°F, or -18°C), then shuts off. That on-off cycle is where the electricity goes. Sitting closed, an empty freezer costs about the same as a full one. This is why people think a mostly-empty freezer is fine.

But nobody leaves their freezer alone. You open it, probably many times a day. That’s where the physics turns on you.

Cold air is heavier than warm air. When you open an upright freezer door, that cold air doesn’t just politely stay put. It pours out the bottom of the opening, kind of like water tipping out of a glass, and warm room air floods in above to take its place. An upright freezer can lose most of its cold air in one door opening. A chest freezer holds onto much more, because cold air sinks and gets trapped under the lid.

Now the part that flips it. Frozen food, ice, and anything dense and frozen don’t lose their cold when the door opens. They just sit there, still frozen, still cold, holding the temperature steady while the air around them gets swapped out. Air, on its own, has almost no ability to hold onto cold.

An empty freezer is basically a big insulated box full of air that gets swapped out every time you reach in for a popsicle. A full one has hardly any air to swap. So in the empty one, the compressor has to fire up and re-cool a fresh load of warm room air from scratch. In the full one, it barely has to work.

Family Handyman, citing the appliance industry and the DOE, notes that manufacturers recommend keeping freezers 75 to 80 percent full for exactly this reason. Not stuffed to the ceiling (the freezer still needs some room for air to move), but nowhere close to empty.

The fix that costs nothing

If your freezer sits half-empty, don’t go buy more groceries. Give that empty space something better to do than sit there full of expensive-to-replace cold air.

Fill it with water.

Not bottled water. Free water, from your tap, in containers you were going to recycle anyway. Once frozen, those containers become permanent cold anchors that hold the temperature steady, cut the compressor’s run time, and pay off in ways you probably weren’t expecting.

The right way to do it:

  1. Use the right plastic. Save clean empty gallon milk jugs, juice jugs, or any container with the recycling code #2 (HDPE) on the bottom. That plastic stays flexible in the freezer and won’t crack. Skip disposable water bottles marked #1 (PET) (the thin, crinkly ones), which get brittle when frozen and can split open.
  2. Rinse each one well with hot soapy water first. Leftover milk or juice can grow bacteria over time, even in a freezer.
  3. Fill with tap water to about one inch (2.5 cm) below the neck. Water expands about 9 percent when it freezes, and a jug filled to the brim can bulge, leak, or burst.
  4. Cap it and stand it upright in any empty shelf gap. Aim for that 75 to 80 percent full mark. Leave clearance around the vents so cold air can still move.
  5. Give it 24 hours to freeze solid. Once it’s a block of ice, it’s doing its job for the life of your freezer. No maintenance.

The three payoffs

The energy savings are real but modest. On a modern ENERGY STAR freezer, you’re looking at a few dollars to a few tens of dollars off your yearly bill, depending on how often you open the door. Older or bigger freezers save more. That alone isn’t life-changing money.

Two other payoffs make this genuinely worth doing.

  • Power outage protection. According to FoodSafety.gov (the federal food-safety site run jointly by USDA, HHS, and the FDA), a full freezer holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours during a power outage. A half-full freezer only holds for 24. Ice jugs turn a half-full freezer into a fully packed one for that math. If hurricanes, ice storms, or grid outages show up where you live, that extra day can be the difference between saving and tossing hundreds of dollars of food.
  • Less freezer burn. Steadier temperatures mean fewer of the tiny thaw-and-refreeze swings that dry out your food. Meat, bread, and berries last longer at real quality.
  • Free backup ice and drinking water. Those frozen jugs are ready to grab for a road-trip cooler, a big BBQ, or an emergency. In a real disaster, sealed frozen tap water is drinking water you didn’t have to buy.

For zero dollars and less than ten minutes of work, that’s a strong return on a habit almost everyone gets wrong.
