A daily bathroom habit is quietly spreading germs onto things you use every day: the fix is instant and free
You wipe the counters. You wash the towels. You keep your toothbrush in its little cup, right where it’s always been. And your bathroom still isn’t as clean as you think it is.
If you’re like most people, there’s a tiny thing you do (or rather, don’t do) fifteen or twenty times a week that quietly ruins a lot of that work. It takes less than a second to fix. It costs nothing. And almost nobody talks about it, because it feels way too small to matter.
But scientists have measured what happens in your bathroom every time you skip it. What they found is genuinely gross, and the fix is so easy it feels almost silly to write down.

The problem you can’t see, on things you use every day
Take a quick look around your bathroom right now. Your toothbrush. The hand towel on the bar. The washcloth on the counter. Your razor. Your kid’s pacifier. The little cup with your electric toothbrush head.
Every one of those things spends its life a few feet from a working toilet. And every one of those things is quietly picking up traces of something you’d be horrified to see under a microscope.
A study out of Quinnipiac University in Connecticut tested toothbrushes from shared bathrooms and found bits of poop bacteria on more than half of them. Even worse: in about 80% of the dirty ones, that bacteria didn’t come from the person the toothbrush belonged to. It came from somebody else’s flush in the same room.
Sit with that for a second. Something about a normal, everyday flush is moving stuff out of the bowl and dropping it, over and over, onto everything nearby. And it happens so quietly that most families have no clue it’s going on. You can wipe down every surface on Sunday morning and, by Sunday night, there’s already fresh contamination on your toothbrush.
That isn’t because your cleaning was bad. It’s because something is happening between the flush and the sink that no amount of counter-wiping is going to catch.

So what’s actually going on in there?
You already know a flush is loud, splashy, and forceful. What you probably don’t know is that all that force does something more than just move water down the drain. It also throws a tiny amount of that same water up, in a spray so fine that you can’t see it with your eyes.
Scientists have a name for this invisible spray, and once they figured out how to actually see it, they realized how far it travels and how long it hangs around in the room. It’s the reason your grandma always seemed weirdly picky about one specific thing in the bathroom. It’s the reason your “clean” bathroom keeps getting dirty again a few hours later. And it’s the reason your toothbrush, sitting quietly on the counter, keeps picking up stuff you’d never want near your mouth.
What actually leaves the bowl
Every regular flush kicks up a fine mist of tiny water droplets from inside the bowl. Not the big splashes you can see. The tiny ones you can’t.
In 2022, a team at the University of Colorado Boulder set up a normal toilet in a lab and pointed strong lasers at it, so they could finally see what leaves the bowl during a flush. The results, published in the journal Scientific Reports, weren’t subtle. The flush shot a jet of air upward at over 6.6 feet per second (2 meters/second), carrying droplets up to about 5 feet (1.5 meters) into the air within 8 seconds of the flush starting. That’s roughly the height of your face when you’re standing at the sink.
Those droplets don’t float politely and land back in the bowl. They drift. They settle. Some hang in the air for 20 seconds or longer, according to hospital research. They land on whatever’s close by: the seat, the floor, the counter, the towel bar, and yes, the toothbrush cup.
And it isn’t just water. If anyone in your house has been sick lately, that spray is carrying whatever’s in the bowl along with it. Norovirus. E. coli. C. diff. These aren’t rare bugs. The CDC calls norovirus the number one cause of throwing up and diarrhea in the U.S., and one of the main ways it spreads inside a house is exactly this: dirty bathroom surfaces.
Scientists have a name for this invisible cloud of germy droplets. They call it a “toilet plume.” Fancy name, simple thing. And it’s why you can wipe every surface every day and still spread fresh germs every few hours: the spray happens after you clean. Bathrooms make it worse too, since they’re small, warm, and steamy, which is basically a spa for bacteria.
The one-second habit that changes everything
The fix is the thing your grandma probably nagged you about, and you filed under “she just likes it that way.” Close the lid before you flush. Every single time.
That’s the whole trick. Zero dollars, under one second, and germ experts now recommend it as a normal household habit.

The numbers back it up. A 2012 study at Leeds Teaching Hospitals in the UK, published in the Journal of Hospital Infection, checked the air over a toilet after a flush. With the lid up, they found 12 times more C. diff bacteria floating in the air than with the lid down. A separate 2022 study found that closing the lid cut the total number of droplets escaping the bowl by 48%, and the total mass of that spray by 66%.
In plain English: closing the lid keeps most of the mess where it belongs. Inside the bowl.
One honesty note. The lid isn’t a perfect seal. A 2024 University of Arizona study led by germ expert Dr. Charles Gerba, published in the American Journal of Infection Control, found that really tiny virus particles can still sneak out through the small gap between the lid and the seat. So the lid still cuts most of the bacterial spray, but on days when someone’s actively sick, wipe down the seat, rim, and flush handle with a disinfectant too. The lid does most of the work. The wipe finishes the job.
What to actually do, starting with your next flush
- Close the lid, then press the handle. In that order, every time. If your toilet doesn’t have a lid, a new lidded seat is cheap and easy to swap.
- Move your toothbrush out of the open. If it’s sitting on the counter within a few feet of the toilet, put it inside the medicine cabinet or a drawer. Skip plastic travel caps (they trap moisture and grow their own bacteria). A closed door is enough.
- Do the same for anything else that touches your mouth or face. Face towels, contact-lens cases, retainer cases, kids’ pacifiers.
- Run the exhaust fan for a couple minutes after each flush. It helps push any droplets that do sneak out of the bowl out of the room.
- When someone’s sick, add one wipe. Give the seat, rim, and flush handle a quick pass with a disinfecting wipe after they use it.
