“Why didn’t I do this sooner?” The 10-minute cable trick that ended my drawer chaos
Open the drawer where you keep your charging cables. Take a look. There’s a good chance you’re staring at a knotted pile of white and black cords, some coiled, some straight, and at least one bulky wall plug still attached to its cable.
You need the USB-C. You reach in. You pull. Three other cords come out with it. You put them back, close the drawer, and tomorrow, you do the same thing again.

If your drawer looks anything like that, there’s a fix that takes about 10 minutes, costs nothing, and uses stuff you already have somewhere in the house. Before you get to it, though, there’s something worth knowing. Most people have tried to fix their cable drawer at least once before, and it slid right back to a mess within weeks. Here’s why those usual fixes almost always fail.
Why the usual fixes don’t stick
The first thing most people try is buying a cable organizer from a home store. One of those trays with little slots for each cord, or a zippered pouch, or a magnetic strip. They cost anywhere from $15 to $40 (about €14 to €38). The trouble is, the moment you grab a cable in a hurry, the whole tray tips sideways and the cords come out of their slots. A month later, you have the same tangled pile in a nicer box.
The second thing people try is a rubber band or hair tie around each cable. That works for about a week. Rubber bands dry out and snap. Hair ties stretch. And neither one tells you at a glance which cord is Lightning and which is USB-C, so you’re still holding each one up to the light.
The third thing is a promise to yourself that you’ll be tidier. It falls apart by day four, when you’re in a rush and the cable goes back in loose.
And once the pile starts building, it gets worse fast. Cables you swear you own go missing for months. You buy a replacement, then find the old one wrapped around a plug you don’t own anymore. You start reaching into the drawer with two hands instead of one.
The problem isn’t the container. It isn’t your discipline either. It’s that loose cables in a moving drawer will always tangle themselves, no matter how tidy you were the day you put them in. Every time the drawer opens and closes, the loose ends slide around, a plug shifts under another cable, and a loop settles inside a loop. Give it two weeks and you have a knot. It happens whether you paid $30 (about €28) for a fancy tray or tossed the cables in loose.
There’s also a hidden cost to leaving the cables tangled, and it’s worth knowing because it costs real money. Every time you yank a cable free from a knot, you’re pulling hard on the plug end. That’s exactly how you kill a charging cable. According to researchers at the University of Maryland who study why gadgets break, cables almost always snap right where the cord meets the plug. Their lead researcher Michael Pecht told the BBC that after years of testing, the real killer isn’t how you store cables. It’s the yanks and sharp bends at the plug end.
Think about the last time you unplugged your phone. Did you grab the plug itself, or did you pull the cord? Most people pull the cord, because the plug is small and the cord is right there in your hand. Now multiply that by every time you dig a cable out of a tangled drawer, adding a second yank on top of the daily one. The little wires inside the cord bend the same way every time, and after a few hundred bends in the same spot, they snap. It’s the same reason a paperclip breaks if you bend it back and forth long enough.
So the tangled drawer isn’t just wasting your time. It’s quietly wearing out a $12 (about €11) cable every few months.
Once you know that, the trick that actually works makes a lot of sense. And it’s so simple that when you see it, you’ll wonder why nobody told you sooner.
The key is that whatever holds a cable together in the drawer has to do two things at once. It has to keep the cord in a closed shape so its ends can’t slide under other cables, and it has to tell you what device the cable belongs to without having to hold it up to the light. Anything that does both those jobs at the same time will fix the drawer for good. Anything that does only one of them will slide back to a mess within a couple of weeks. That’s the rule the fancy trays and the rubber bands both miss.
The 10-minute trick that actually works
Here it is. Two things you probably already own, and about ten minutes of your Sunday.
- A small binder clip for each cable (the black metal ones from any desk drawer).
- A strip of masking tape or painter’s tape for each cable, plus a pen.
That’s the whole shopping list. Nothing to buy.

The steps:
- Pull every cable out of the drawer and lay them on the counter.
- Take one cable. Fold it into a loose oval loop about the size of your palm. Keep it relaxed, and don’t bend the cable sharply right where it meets the plug.
- Squeeze the binder clip onto the middle of the loop, right where the cable crosses itself. The loop is now locked shut. It can’t come undone.
- Tear off a small piece of tape (about an inch, or 2.5 cm). Stick it onto the flat handle of the binder clip. Write on it in pen: USB-C, Lightning, Kindle, Watch, Camera, or whatever tells you at a glance which device it belongs to.
- Put the labeled loop back in the drawer.
- Do the same for every cable.
Ten minutes. Every cable in the drawer is now its own little labeled bundle. Nothing weaves through anything else, because the loose ends are clipped shut and have nowhere to go. When you open the drawer, you see a neat row of labeled loops. You grab the one you want in about two seconds. The rest stay right where they were.
Don’t have binder clips? A Velcro cable strap (the reusable kind that comes wrapped around new appliances) works just as well. So does a bread bag twist tie, or a small wrap of painter’s tape. What matters is that the loop stays closed when the drawer moves, and that a label on the outside tells you what it is.
