This one shower habit almost every home repeats is quietly clogging the drain: a $3 fix stops it instantly
Every time someone showers, they lose hair. Not a few strands. Dozens. Sometimes over a hundred.
The Cleveland Clinic puts the normal daily number at 50 to 150 hairs a day. Dr. Wilma Bergfeld, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, says most of that shedding actually happens in the shower. Warm water and the pull of shampooing knock loose the hairs that were already ready to fall out anyway. That’s normal. The American Academy of Dermatology says the same thing: 50 to 100 hairs a day is standard, and the shower is where most of them come out.
Which sounds fine. Until you think about where all those hairs actually go.
They go down the drain. Every day. Every shower. Every person in the house. And here’s the part nobody thinks about: hair doesn’t break down in water. Scientists who study fibers have shown that human hair is surprisingly tough, closer to a thin fishing line than to something soft. It doesn’t rot. It doesn’t melt away. It doesn’t wash through the pipes and disappear.
It sits somewhere. And it piles up.

Where the strands are actually going
Just under the shower floor, the pipe bends into a U-shape called the P-trap. That U-shape always holds a little bit of water in it, which stops smells from the sewer from coming back up into the bathroom. Handy design. But that same bend is also the perfect spot for a strand of hair to snag on.
Once one strand catches, the next one grabs onto it. Then another. Over weeks and months, those strands weave together into a wet, matted rope, and that rope starts catching everything else that comes down the drain: soap scum, body oil, leftover conditioner, dead skin, shampoo film. The whole thing sticks together into a dense, gunky net.
Water still gets through, at first. That’s the trick of it. The drain feels fine. Nothing looks wrong from the top. Meanwhile the pipe underneath is quietly narrowing, one wash at a time.
The homeowner never sees the mat. They just notice, months later, that water is starting to pool around their feet a little longer than it used to.
What people reach for when they finally notice, and why it makes things worse
Once the drain slows down, the usual move is to reach for a bottle. Drano, Liquid-Plumr, whatever’s under the sink. Pour it in, wait, run the water.
Here’s the problem. Those bottles are not made for hair.
Roto-Rooter, the biggest drain-cleaning company in the country, says it plainly: liquid drain cleaners are made to break up grease and soap scum, not hair. Their plumbers explain that a hair clog isn’t solid enough for the chemicals to grab onto, so the liquid just slides right past the tangle and barely touches it.
And those bottles can hurt the pipes they sit in. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency actually lists chemical drain cleaner as household hazardous waste, right next to paint thinner, bug spray, and motor oil. On its official page about cutting down on dangerous products at home, the EPA says to use a plunger or a drain snake instead. That’s the U.S. government’s position on it.
It’s not just the pipes either. MedlinePlus, run by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (part of the National Institutes of Health), has a full poisoning page for drain cleaner. The symptoms listed include severe burns in the mouth and throat, tissue damage, trouble breathing, and loss of eyesight if it splashes in the eyes. A 2023 study of poison-control calls in the U.S. found that oven and drain cleaners caused the most serious injuries out of every household cleaning product for kids under six.
So the go-to fix doesn’t work on the actual clog, wears out the pipes over time, and happens to be one of the most dangerous things in the whole house.
Meanwhile the clog keeps growing. The water keeps slowing. And sooner or later, someone is on the phone with a plumber, paying a house-call fee to have a wet gray rope of hair pulled out of the U-bend.
What actually stops the clog, and what it costs
Here’s what the same Roto-Rooter plumbers actually tell people to do, and it comes in two parts. Both are boring. Both take seconds. Together, they cost about the same as a coffee.
Part one: brush your hair before you get in the shower.
Not after. Before. When hair is dry, a quick brushing pulls out the strands that were about to shed anyway. They come out on the brush, in a dry clump, and go straight into the trash can. They never get near the drain. Roto-Rooter’s homeowner guide lists this as the first step because it cuts down how many strands even go into the shower in the first place.
Part two: put a mesh hair catcher on top of the drain.
A basic silicone or stainless steel catcher costs about $3 to $5 (roughly 3 to 5 euros / 2.50 to 4 pounds) at any hardware store, drugstore, or big-box store. It sits flat on the drain. Water goes through. Hair doesn’t. At the end of the shower, you pick it up, wipe the trapped strands into the trash, rinse it, and put it back. That’s it.
That’s the whole fix. Brush first. Catch what still falls.
The reason it works is boring in the best way. Nothing gets into the U-bend. Nothing sticks to soap scum. Nothing weaves into a rope. The moment the catcher goes on the drain and the brushing habit starts, the clog stops growing. Not slowly. Right away. Every strand that would have gone down there is now sitting on top of the drain instead, easy to see, easy to throw out.
It won’t undo a clog that’s already fully formed. If the shower is already backing up, that mess has to come out by hand or with a drain snake. But once the drain is clear, the two-step habit is what keeps it that way for years.
The math that makes it obvious
Think about what’s happening in the shower this week. In a two-person home, that’s easily 700 hairs a day going somewhere. Multiply that by 365. Now multiply that by the years the family has lived in the house.
None of it broke down. None of it dissolved. Almost all of it is either still in the pipes or was pulled out during a service call.
