DIY Geometric Camera Strap Sewing Tutorial

Sick of your factory-made camera strap? Dress it up with some geometric fabric! This tutorial will show you how to useyour boring old black strapto make a fun, more colorful one. All you need is some heavy-duty fabric and a few tools. Keep reading to find out how to do it!
Here’s what you’ll need for Camera Strap:
- Your original factory-made camera strap
- One piece of heavy-duty fabric that is 3 1/2″ wide than your camera strap and 2″ longer (measure from one leather cover to the other. My fabric ended up beingsize 5″ x 22″)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Safety pin (not pictured)
- Thread
- Sewing machine (not pictured)
How to craft the Camera Strap:
First, fold the fabric in half lengthwise and sew down the raw edge using a 1/2″ seam allowance. This will create a fabric tube.
Next, cut off the excess fabric leaving about 1/8″ next to the seam.
Attach a safety pin to the end of the fabric tube. Stick the safety pin back down inside of the tube and pull it through (this will turn it right side out).
Pull it all the way through so the entire thing is right side out.
Now attach the safety pin to the strap where the smaller piece meets the leather cover.
Slip the strap into the fabric tube, and pull it through using the safety pin to assist you. As long as you measured correctly, the fabric should fit snugly around the strap. Myleather cover on the endwas just slightly wider than the strap so it was difficult to pull it over the leather… if this happens, just be patient and keep shimmying the fabric up.

Once you get to the end, fold one inch of the top of the fabric over inside the tube. Folding the strap a bit makes this process much easier.
Now flatten it out and make sure that the seam is centered on the back. Sew parallel to the leather cover to attach the fabric to the strap. Straighten out the fabric and do the same exact process on the other end.

And that’s it! You’re finished. Now go take some photos with your tricked out camera!
