Before you start, make sure you’re working on a protected surface.  the candy can get messy and sticky, so be sure to keep a damp cloth or paper towel handy. I went to the dollar store and loaded my cart with a lot of candy. I wasn’t sure at the time how much I needed, so I bought eight packs of different types of candy.  I only ended up using about six packs. You can gauge what kind of candy you need by looking at your letters. Twizzlers are great for creating long, straight lines. Dots are good for filling the smaller spaces, along with Skittles.  Stretchy candy works for curving around corners. In the end, if you buy too much, you can always use it at the party!

First, wipe any dust off of the letters with a cloth. Keep a handy pair of scissors nearby and a trash can to eliminate all of the wrappers you’ll have.  I purchased white letters instead of brown, because white looks a lot more festive for a party. It is sure to show through underneath the candy and you want to to match the rest of your decor.

Begin gluing down the pieces of candy onto the letters. There really is not right or wrong way to do this.  You’ll just want to fill in as much of the empty space as possible. Use the longer pieces to edge the letters, and the smaller pieces to fill in the tiny gaps.  If you want, create an ombre affect with the candy, or place them at random for a whimsical look.  As you go along wipe off any candy “dust” as needed. I found that with the Sour Patch Kids, the candy has a sour coating that falls off of the pieces.  If using that type, sure to wipe it with a damp cloth.

If a child is doing this craft, use a tacky glue instead of hot glue for safety. Hot glue dries fast, but other craft glues can also dry clear and be easier to work with for kids. Spray all of the letters with a clear varnish to preserve the candy and protect it.
