How to Make DIY Fall Sunflower Wall Art

Before we even get started, we want to make sure you have all the material on hand. If your worktable looks about the same as ours does, you’re good to go. The last thing you want is to go running around for some extra materials when your glue gun is fired up and ready to use. Ready? Let’s go!

Fall sunflower wall art materials

Step 1: Paint the picture frame base

The first thing you want to do is to get the oval wooden picture frame base and the beige acrylic paint and paintbrush.

You want to make sure you cover the whole area properly, spreading the color equally everywhere. Once you’re done, you can set it off to dry. Since we’re using acrylic paint, that shouldn’t take long at all.

Step 2: Paint the top picture frame

Next, we’re going to paint the top part of your picture frame. Ours is oval, but you can go for whatever shade you have laying around. We’re also using the gold acrylic paint for the job. Dab your paintbrush into the paint and start laying down the color.

Make sure you cover all spots on the wood material. Once you’re done, set the frame aside and give it time to dry.

Step 3: Cut out the shapes

Get a piece of paper and draw several shapes – a circle, a large leaf-shape, and three sizes of tear-drop-shaped petals.

Get yourscissorsand cut them out, making sure to follow the contour as best as you can.

Step 4: Draw and cut some yellow petals

Grab the pointy petal shape and place it over your yellow paper. Grab the pencil and start drawing in more and more petals, following the contour of your cut-out.

Once you’ve filled in the first row, grab the second petal shape and use that one instead.

When the second row of petals is done, grab the third petal shape and contour it on the page.

Then, get the circle and start drawing in a single circle on the yellow paper.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (16)

Get your scissors next and cut out the petals you just drew. Make sure you follow the contour as best you can; it’s not the end of the world if you miss here and there, but you want them to be consistent.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (17)

Step 5: Fold the petals

Now that you have your petal cutouts ready, it’s time you fold them.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (18)

Grab each piece and gently fold it down the middle, as you can see in the picture.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (19)

Repeat the process until you’ve gone through the whole pile!

Fall sunflower wall art steps (20)

This will give your flower creation some more depth.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (21)

Step 6: Cut the brown paper

Next, it’s time you grabbed the brown paper. Cut out a piece about an inch wide.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (22)

Fold it down the middle and gently press on the paper. Make sure the fold is done straight, as it’s fairly easy for the paper to ‘escape’ and you’ll then get a skewed line.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (23)

Get the scissors and start cutting the folded brown paper. DO NOT cut through the whole paper. You want to do small slices on the paper, about half the width of the folded paper.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (24)

There you go! You’re almost done!

Fall sunflower wall art steps (25)

Step 7: Roll and glue the brown paper

Next, you want to start rolling the brown paper.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (26)

You want to make sure you apply the same pressure when rolling the paper throughout.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (27)

Get the glue gun and apply some hot glue just as you’re about to finish rolling the paper, so you can make sure the creation is there to stay.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (28)

Look how cute this is!

Fall sunflower wall art steps (29)

Step 8: Cut another piece of brown paper

Now you can get the brown paper again and cut another slice. You want to make sure it’s about the same width than the first strip of paper.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (30)

Fold the paper in half and get the scissors!

Fall sunflower wall art steps (31)

Start making shallow cuts – about half the width of the paper – over the whole length of the paper. You want to make the cuts close together, so go slow!

Fall sunflower wall art steps (32)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (33)

Now, grab the first rolled-up paper and add some hot glue just on the spot where the first roll ended. Place the second strip of paper over the spot.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (34)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (35)

Keep rolling the new strip of paper over the original piece.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (36)

Once you’re done, add some hot glue to the paper and place the end over it, so close the piece.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (37)

Keep the paper pressed for a few seconds so the material sticks.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (38)

Step 9: Build the sunflower

Now, we need to start building the sunflower. Pick up the yellow circle and add some hot glue to its center.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (39)

Grab the longest flower petals and start placing them on the yellow circle, forming a flower.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (40)

You want to put the rounded edge in the center of the flower, and the pointy end outward.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (41)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (42)

Add more hot glue and start adding the next size of petals.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (43)

Once more, place the petals in a circle, overalying the first round.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (44)

Keep adding the smaller petals too, forming multiple layers of petals on the flower.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (45)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (46)

When you’re done, get the ruffled up brown paper and add it in the middle of the flower. Make sure you add plenty of hot glue on the edges of the paper.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (47)

Keep it pressed for a few seconds to make sure it sticks! Since it’s such a big piece, you want to make sure you add enough hot glue.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (48)

Step 10: Draw and cut the leaves

Now that the sunflower is done, get the big leaf-shaped pattern and the green paper and pencil. Start tracing the pattern, creating multiple leaves.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (49)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (50)

Once you have about four of them, get thescissorsand cut them out.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (51)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (52)

When the leaves are done, we need to make sure they have the same dimension as the petals do. So, grab the scissors and start making little cuts.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (53)

As you can see in the picture, you want to make the small cuts angled as a real leaf would have. Make sure the cuts are absolutely tiny and on the very edge of the paper.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (54)

Now they look more realistic!

Fall sunflower wall art steps (55)

Step 11: Glue the frame together

Next, you want to take the top side of the oval wooden frame and turn it over. By now the paint would have completely dried. Add a lot of hot glue to the back of the frame and press it over the base.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (56)

Keep the two pieces pressed together for a few seconds.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (57)

Step 12: Add a hanging ribbon

Now, it’s time to get the lace ribbon and measure out a length of the material. You want to make sure you can hang the piece.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (58)

Once you’ve decided on a length, get the scissors and cut it out.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (59)

Turn the frame face down and add some hot glue to the back of the piece. Press the lace ribbon into the hot glue.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (60)

Repeat the process for the other end of the ribbon.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (61)

Keep both pieces pressed for a few seconds to ensure they’re not going anywhere.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (62)

Step 13: Trace and write

Now, you want to trace the words “Hello Fall” in the top area of the frame. Use the pencil to do this, so you can easily cover up if you mess up. Make sure you use your best calligraphy skills.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (63)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (64)

Once you’re happy with your result, get the black liner and follow the penciled in words.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (65)

There you go! So pretty!

Fall sunflower wall art steps (66)

Step 14: Glue everything together

Now’s the time to start adding in the flower and the leaves to the frame. Once you have a rough idea of where you want the flower to be, place some hot glue to the frame.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (67)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (68)

We went with two leaves glued to the right side of the frame, and two to the left side. Also, we made sure to glue the leaf to the inside of the frame too.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (69)

In this way, the leaves are properly glued in and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (70)

Fall sunflower wall art steps (71)

Get the sunflower and turn it around, adding a lot of hot glue to its back.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (72)

Carefully place it on the frame, in between the green leaves. Make sure you gently press it in so the glue sets.

Fall sunflower wall art steps (73)

There you have it! A beautiful piece you can hang on your wall to welcome the fall.
