How To Make a Simple Tulle-Lined Circle Skirt

Whether you’re young or old, circle skirts are a classic style that can be made into fun cutesy looks or glamorous styles. What’s the best part of a circle skirt, though? That fact that they’re so easy to make by yourself, of course!

Huppie Mama guides you through the process of sewing your own circle skirt step by step. The tutorial even shows you how to create a tulle liner inside so that the skirt has some great looking volume. For those with very little sewing experience, we’ve broken it down even further!

Step 1:

Decide which colour or pattern you’d like to make your circle skirt in! Try to choose a lightweight fabric that’s easier to sew, like cotton or taffeta, rather than something slippery and difficult to work with, like spandex.

Step 1

Step 2:

Gather your materials! You’ll need:

  • 1 yard of your chosen lightweight fabric
  • 2 yards tulle
  • coordinating thread
  • coordinating 1/2″ ribbon
  • 2″ elastic

Step 2

Step 3:

There’s an easy formula for making circle skirts! Measure around your waist in inches or centimeters, whichever you prefer working with. Divide your waist measurement by 6.28. From the corner of a large piece of paper, measure the resulting length all the way from one side to the other in a semi-circle. Cut the corner off along this line.

Step 3

Step 4:

Decide how far down your leg you want the skirt to sit and measure that length. From the semi-circle edge you just cut, measure the length all the way from one side to the other in another semi-circle, like you did before only bigger. Cut along that line as well.

Step 4

Step 5:

Fold your your lightweight material in half and then in half again so you have a layered square of fabric. Place the paper pattern you just made near a corner and even with each edge. Pin it into place so it doesn’t slide around when you try to cut the shape out.

Step 5

Step 6:

Cut around the paper pattern. When you’re finished, remove the pins and unfold the skirt. It should be a big circle with a smaller circular hole in the middle, just like this!

Step 6

Step 7:

Cut your tulle into four pieces that approximately 2 yards by 10 inches.

Step 8

Step 8:

Stack two pieces of tulle on top of each other and use a basting stitch along their longer side to sew them together. Repeat this process with the other two pieces of tulle.

Step 8

Step 9:

Measure a piece of elastic to the circumference of your waist plus an extra inch, and cut it to that length. Pin the layers of tool along the elastic, bunching them to fit. The bunching will create a voluminous tutu effect that will hold the skirt up.

Step 9

Step 10:

Use your sewing machine to sew the tulle all along the elastic. Use a zigzag stitch to allow the elastic the keep most of its stretch.

Step 10

Step 11:

Sew the ends of the elastic together to make a full skirt liner. Line the ends up face to face and sew about an inch from the edge. Next, fold the ends out and sew them down as well for extra hold and a neat finish.

Step 11

Step 12:

Try the tulle skirt liner on to make sure it fits.

Step 12

Step 13:

Pin your circle skirt to the elastic. To start, turn your circle inside out and upside down so that the good side that will show lays against the side of the elastic that will actually show as a waistband. The top edge of the circle’s waist should line up with the bottom edge of the elastic where it meets the tool. The circle will be bigger than the elastic, so you will have to cinch the fabric slightly as you go.

Step 13

Step 14:

Flip the fabric over to make sure everything lines up correctly and there are no holes around the edge at the waistband. Flip it back and sew along the edge that you pinned using a zigzag stitch to let it keep its stretch. Remove the pins.

Step 14

Step 15:

Your circle skirt is finished! Slip it on and enjoy!
