Step 1: Gently wipe away any imperfections from the eggshell.  This will ensure that all of the elements adhere to the egg properly.  You cook your egg if you want- I suggest boiling them and your guests can eat them later if they choose to.

Step 2:

Either cut or tear strips of tissue paper.  I prefer tearing because it gives the eggs an imperfect look.  If you want sharper, cleaner edges, use scissors and create fun shapes.  Don’t make the shapes too large or complicated, as you want them to be able to lay somewhat flat with minimal wrinkles.

Step 3:

Paint a thin layer of ModPodge onto the egg.  Place a strip of tissue paper onto the egg and cover it with another thin layer of ModPodge.  Smooth it out with the spongebrush or with your fingers to help it adhere.  This will start to get a bit messy, so be sure to keep a towel or wet rag nearby for easy cleanup.

Step 4:

Continue these steps, adding as many layers as you want.  Be sure to cover the entire egg.  Switch up the colors and shapes of the tissue paper to give variation.  Set each egg aside to dry.  As the ModPodge dries, you’ll start to see some imperfections.  These darker and lighter parts, along with some wrinkles in the tissue paper, give these eggs a fun look.

Step 5:

By now your fingers will probably be very sticky.  Take a minute to wash your hands before moving on.  Once the eggs are completely dry, create a small hole at the top of the egg with a thumbtack.  Gently wiggle it a bit to open up the hole, just enough to insert a toothpick.

Step 6:

Add the name on a small strip of cardstock and tape it to the toothpick.  Stick the toothpick down into the hole a bit, but not too much- just enough for it to be secure and not fall out.

These eggs will have a fun, “dinosaur” look once they’re complete.  Place them at each place setting for the kids.  If you want, you can add a small “Happy Easter” note or any other greeting instead of the name tag.  Kids can help with this DIY as you make the any other party food.
