How to make a chicken wire frame

Before you start creating anything, we want to make sure that you have all the elements ready. We know how distracting and disruptive it can be to run around trying to find various items you’ve forgotten. So, get everything you need before you even start. Ready? Let’s go!

Step 1: Paint the frame

We’re going to start this project by painting the frame. Get the gray acrylic paint, the paintbrush, and the wood frame. Dip the paintbrush into the paint and start laying down the color over the wood frame.

Do not forget to also paint the edges of the frame, as they will be visible and you don’t want the whole thing to look “off.”

Chicken wire frame steps (2)

Slowly paint the whole frame, making sure to cover all possible grooves in the frame.

There you go, almost done!

Chicken wire frame steps (5)

Turn the frame over and paint the back of it too. It won’t take that long to do, and it will give the frame a more finished touch.

Chicken wire frame steps (6)

Make sure not to paint the hanging details. Of course, unless you specifically want to.

Chicken wire frame steps (7)

Set the frame aside and allow it some time to dry. Acrylic paint dries up pretty fast, so there shouldn’t have to wait too long. Plus, you’re going to be busy with other things, anyway.

Step 2: Make some crepe paper flowers

For our next step, we’ll need the crepe paper. We went with white, but you can also go with yellow, pink, or red. As long as you’ve seen flowers in that color, you’re good to go.

Chicken wire frame steps (9)

Cut a large piece of crepe paper with yourscissors. Try to cut it as straight as you can go.

Chicken wire frame steps (10)

Once the paper is cut, turn it so the folds are horizontal in front of you. You’ll want to estimate where the paper splits in three equal sizes. You can also get a ruler out and measure them up if you’d rather.

Chicken wire frame steps (11)

Get the scissors again and cut out three ribbons.

Chicken wire frame steps (12)

Pick up every ribbon you created and straighten out the paper. Fold the ribbon in two along the length of the paper. Gently press your finger into the paper as you go and try to keep a straight line.

Chicken wire frame steps (13)

Once the paper is folded, it’s time to start rolling it up. Fold the paper just a tiny bit and then keep going.

After you’ve rolled the paper a few times, it’s time to take an extra step. As you go, keep twisting the paper.

Chicken wire frame steps (16)

In this way, you’ll quickly get a 3D flower that’s a lot more visually appealing than if you’d just rolled the paper and tried to fold the edges.

Chicken wire frame steps (17)

Then, when you’re nearly done, get the glue gun and add a bunch of hot glue to the paper. Press the crepe paper there and close the flower.

Go through the process three times, rolling up each of the paper ribbons into flowers.

Step 3: Apply the stencil

Next, you want to get out the stencil. Ours is adhesive, but if yours isn’t, you can make sure it doesn’t go anywhere with a bit of paper tape.

We chose to place our stencil on the corner of the frame.

Cover the entire area with white paint, making sure the entire design is going to be visible.

Chicken wire frame steps (25)

Slowly remove the stencil from the frame. Doesn’t it look pretty?!

Step 4: Add the chicken wire

Next, we need to grab the piece of chicken wire we have on hand. Turn the frame face down and place the chicken wire over it, covering the center.

Chicken wire frame steps (27)

Get your scissors or some pliers and cut the chicken wire so it fits directly over the indent where the picture would go.

Chicken wire frame steps (28)

Trim the wires as necessary, making sure to keep checking how it fits. You don’t want to cut too much and then have to start over with a new piece of chicken wire.

Almost done! Just a bit more left to cut here!

Chicken wire frame steps (31)

Next, get the glue gun and start adding hot glue to the frame, pressing each bit of wire into it.

You want to add hot glue on all the sides where the chicken wire touches the frame.

Go on adding the glue on all sides of the frame. Since this is wire, you want to make sure it’s not going to move so it doesn’t hurt you later on when handling the frame.

Step 5: Add the leaves and flowers

Next, let’s prepare the leaves required for the design. Trim the tails so they’re not too long and make sure you cut them off the branch if any is present.

Get the glue gun and add some on the corner opposite to the one where you painted in the stencil. Press the leaves into the glue and wait for it to set.

We chose to go with two larger leaves here.

Then add some more hot glue and press a paper flower into it. Make sure not to press too hard since the paper is delicate.

Add the second flower in the same manner right next to the first one.

Repeat the process with the third flower and create a bouquet on the corner of the frame.

Chicken wire frame steps (46)

If you have any other leaves, add them in if you find a place for them. We noticed another one would look nice between the flowers.

It looks wonderful and we want to hear back from you so you can tell us if you made any alterations. Obviously, this is a design where you can choose a different paint color, or a different crepe paper color, as well as a different stencil. Chances that you find the exact same stencil are, after all, quite slim.
