How to Create a Reflective Shirt Collar from an Old CD

Refashioning clothing to keep up with trends is a cheaper way to stay stylish than always buying something new. It’s also a great way to customize pieces however you choose to keep your wardrobe unique! Have you ever thought of refashioning clothing using other household items that need upcycling?

Here’s how to create a gorgeous mirrored shirt collar for an old blouse in a few simple steps!

Step 1:

Choose a blouse that you love, but that you wish had a little more sass! Make sure your blouse has a collar.(Source: 365 Hangers)

Iron yours shirt’s collar. This project will be much easier if the collar sits properly and flat!

Gather your materials! You’ll need:

  • Old CD’s or DVD’s
  • Scissors
  • Strong multi-surface glue (like E6000)
  • A dishcloth
  • An electric kettle
  • A pan

Fill your kettle and boil the water.

Carefully pour your boiling water into your saucepan.

Place your CD’s or DVD’s in the boiling water and let them soak for five minutes.

Take your CD’s out of the water. Place them on a dish cloth to dry and cool off enough to touch.

Cut each CD in half, right across the middle and the centre hole.

Separate the shiny layer of the CD from the plastic layer. They should come right apart after heating.

Cut the shiny side of the CD into small, angular pieces. These are the pieces you’ll use on your shirt.

Map out where you want the pieces to go. With strong glues, you don’t get two chances to place your pieces! Lay them out on the collar to get an idea of which sizes and shapes you want on which parts of  the collar.(Source: Ms Loud)

Once you’ve decided where you’d like your shiny pieces to sit, it’s time to start gluing! Hold each piece for a moment and press it down to make sure it will dry where you want it to sit.
