Urban Outfitters Knockoff: Indoor Hanging Gold Planter

Urban Outfitters has some unique planters in their Apartment section, but they can be a bit pricey for what they are. So I got to thinking… maybe I could make my own version of their Assembly Home Eos Hanging Planter (shown below). So I gave it a shot, and mine turned out prettysimilar to the inspiration from Urban Outfitters, don’t you think?!

And it was quitesimple to make – the only tricky part was making sure that the dowels were the correct length. So read on to find out how to make your very own hanging gold planter.

Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

  • A bowl approximately 8″ in diameter
  • Darice Gold Metal Ring, 14″
  • Gold tone wire
  • High-quality gold tone chain
  • Gold tone hook
  • Wooden dowel rod, 1/4″thickness
  • Gold spray paint
  • Electric drill with 1/4″ drill bit
  • Small saw
  • Pliers
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood glue
  • E6000 glue (not pictured)

How to make this indoor hanging planter:

Begin by setting the dowel on yourwork surface, then set the ring on top of it and the bowl on top of that as shown above. Mark where the bowl edges are, and mark the outside of the ring (leave 1/4″ of extra dowel rod on either side of the ring, visible at left).

Saw at those marks. Sand down the ends of the dowels so everything is nice and smooth.

Next, drill a hole in the side of the bowl. Although it doesn’t look like it in the photo above, the drill angle should be parallel to the top of the bowl. Drill only about a quarter of an inch into the bowl, not all the way through. Now repeat this process on the opposite side of the bowl.

Now is the time to test out the sizing and make sure that your measurements were correct. Stick the dowels that you cut into the holes you drilled and put this whole piece inside of the metal ring – the edges of the dowels should it should fit snugly across the diameter of the ring. If it’s too loose, cut another piece of dowel that is a bit longer. If it’s too tight, sand or cut a bit off the ends of the dowels.

Put a small dab of wood glue in the hole and place a dowel inside. Do the same on the other side.

Some glue may ooze out – wipe it off with a piece of paper towel. Let the glue dry for a half an hour or so.

Now bring the whole thing outside and spray paint it gold. I would recommend two light coats, or else you’ll run the risk of having drip marks. Let itdry thoroughly.

Now put a small dab of E6000 glue on each end of the dowels.

To allow it to dry correctly, you’ll want to set up a contraption like I’ve done above. A yard stick which is weighted down on the oppositeend works perfectly to hold the bowl upside down.

Let the E6000 dry for a couple of hours. Next, cut a piece of gold wire that’s about 8″ long and begin carefully wrapping it around the connection point of the dowel and the metal ring. Do the same on the other side.

Lastly, measure the distance from your ceiling to where you want the top of the planter to be. Multiply that number by two, and cut a piece of chain thatlength. Open alink on one end with your pliers, loop the chain around the top of the ring, and then connect the two ends of the chain forming a loop.

Twist the hook into your ceiling and slip the chain over it – and you’re finished! Now fill your planter up with a plant or two. I chose airplants (also known as Tillandsia) because they are light and don’t need any soil, but you could also try a succulent. To raisethe airplants up a bit, I placed some cotton along the bottom of the bowl.

It makes a funky addition to any corner, and is sure to be a topicof conversation when your friends come to visit.

I love the gold, but you could also try mixing metals too – or you could even try a colorblocked look, painting the bowland the dowels different colors. The possibilities are endless. Enjoy!
