Christmas Joy Holiday Wreath

To kick of the holiday season, you’ll definitely need a not-so-traditional wreath for your front door. Instead of creating a circular wreath, try adding some simple flair to a basic wreath made of sticks and add letters with other floral decorations. Hang it on your door, or above your fireplace mantel for a bit of rustic decor this season.

Joy Holiday Wreath

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • A smaller wreath, one that’s around twelve inches in diameter (this wreath made of branches/sticks was purchased from my local craft store in the floral section)
  • Wooden letters
  • Fine grit sand paper (optional)
  • Holiday embellishments
  • Floral wire
  • Scissors or wire cutters

Materials to create a Joy Holiday Wreath

Pick wooden letters for this project, not cardboard ones. These letters are also relatively thin, at about 5/8 of an inch thick.  Thinner letters make it easy for the floral wire to hold securely in place. For this wreath I am spelling out the word “JOY,” with the wreath being the “O.”  At the craft store I couldn’t find darker wooden letters, so I bought the white ones with the intention of sanding down the edges to give it a slightly rustic look. My front door is red, so I liked that the white letters would be a great contrast against my front door.

Sand the letters down as much as you like with a fine grit sand paper. Sanding it reveals the brown, wooden layer underneath the white with picks up the brown in the stick wreath. You can also paint these, or decoupage them- whatever you feel will match the rest of your decor.

When you feel you’ve revealed just enough of the underlining wood layer, wipe the letters down with a damp cloth to remove any sawdust.  Then attach the letters to the wreath. I found it easier to use floral wire to attach them instead of glue, but you can also use glue if you feel you need more reinforcement. Position the letters at the top and bottom of the wreath, and off center if you choose.

Wrap the floral wire around the letter and twist it at the back to secure it.

Add your embellishments at the top right corner of the wreath. Create a small hook with the end of the floral piece for easy weaving into this type of wreath. You can use any type of holiday embellishments you’d prefer. I chose this bundle of pine leaves, pine cones and apples with a bit of white snow to tie in the white from the letters.

Be sure to hide any excess wire within the wreath.Hang it on a Command hook, nail in the wall, or wreath hook and you’re done! I love this DIY, because it requires no glue and therefore, no drying time. It’s fast and easy and you don’t have to buy so many floral pieces and ribbon as you would if you were creating a traditional holiday wreath. Happy holidays!
