When new neighbors move into the neighborhood it’s always a nice gesture to bring a gift over to welcome them.  Most people opt for a pie, cookies, or cake, but why not mix it up a bit with a plant!  This is not just any old plant, it’s a succulent in an old soup can!

When food containers are empty, we always toss them into the trash. In the case of the metal canned good, you may want to rethink tossing this out since it can be upcycled into a cute vessel to house a housewarming plant.  All you need is some pretty paper, twine, and a plant to create a unique and friendly welcoming gift your neighbor will love!

Step 1: Remove the label from your can. You can soak it under warm water to loosen it. If there is still a little bit of adhesive left on your can, use your finger to try and pick it off. Once your can is clean and dry, align your patterned paper with the bottom of your can and wrap it around. Use your pencil to trace around the top of the can marking just below the lip.

Step 5: Create the message you want to add to your planter (I used Picmonkey to create mine).

Step 6: After you design your message, add your craft paper to your printer and print your message.

Step 7: Next, use your scissors to trim around your message, creating the shape of a tag. You could create a rectangle, or any other shape of your liking!

Step 8: Use your pencil or scissors to poke a hole in the top of your tag. Then, cut a piece of twine that is a yard long. Pull one end of your twine through the hole in your tag, starting at the back and through the front.

Add rope to your tag

Step 9: Begin wrapping your twine around your can a few times. When you have about 5 inches of twine left, pull the loose ends of twine through the hole in your tag, starting at the back and then through the front. You will then tie a bow. Trim any excess twine.

Add to can

Step 10: Add pebbles to the bottom of your can and top it with and dirt. Then, add your succulent.

You are left with a budget friendly housewarming gift that is sure to brighten your new neighbor’s day!
